the project - what it is all about
This website is the contemplary work for the seminar LGBT Culture held by Hernando Gomez Prada at the University of Leipzig in the summer term of 2016.
Based on the proposal of working on queer music, we got to the idea of providing information about queer music artists from portuguese speaking contries in english in order to make their music and issues accessible for more people: activists, people from the queer scene, music lovers, fans of brazilian culture and each and everybody who might be interested.
In so doing we hope to give more power to those voices which are nationally and internationally still very oppressed and condemned.
Besides exploring how queer music is taking place in romance cultures, particularly in Brazil, this project is also interested in examining some Brazilian queer lyrics as a form of pop culture qualitative data.
We believe the music of these talented artists is rich in content and we are sure through their art, they express how they see the world. It is our intention in this website to interpret the different meanings in which their songs are created and most importantly, we want to explore the link between agency and structure. In other words, we would like to understand how these musicians are affected by the different political, economic, and cultural forces driven their lives.
Since Music always has been breaking ground for LGBT communities and therefor an important part of gay culture all over the world the list of great, anthemic songs of empowerment, hope and self-acceptance is long. Cher, Madonna, Gloria Gaynor, Weather Girls, Judy Garland, Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga, Kylie Minogue and others belong to the ultimate queer playlist for obvious reasons.
With all that in mind, we set out to create a portuguese-brazilian playlist for the perfect Pride Party. We want to contribute to LGBT visibility, tolerance and awareness by sharing video clips and the interpretation of their meaningful lyrics from probably less famous but incredible talented portuguese-brazilian musicians.
But the work has just begun, so watch out for what you will here in the next weeks ;)
